Hearing Loss & Brain Tissue

After scanning the brains of people who had not addressed their hearing loss, Johns Hopkins University research has shown that people with unaddressed hearing loss will lose more brain tissue on an annual basis vs. those who exercise their brains with hearing aids: “Overall, the scientists report those with impaired hearing lost more than an additional cubic centimeter of brain tissue each year compared with those with normal hearing”

The research was supported by the intramural research program of the National Institute on Aging, the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders .Susan Resnick, Ph.D., of the National Institute on Aging was the study’s senior investigator. Michael A. Kraut, M.D., Ph.D., of Johns Hopkins; and Luigi Ferrucci, M.D., Ph.D., and Yang An, M.S., both of the National Institute on Aging, also contributed to this research

Hearing Loss & Relationship Challenges

Being unable to understand someone can be extremely frustrating. Data shows that on average, people delay addressing their hearing loss for seven years after initial symptoms arise. Through the years, as many struggle to communicate one-on-one and in group settings, they frequently start to withdraw from key conversations with their spouses, family and loved ones. Phone conversations can be challenging and frustrating for those on both ends of the line.

Does Hearing Loss Affect My Balance?

Many of those who have trouble with their balance find that the problem lies in their ears. Ear balance disorders can make you feel unsteady, wobbly, or like you are constantly moving. These sensations of vertigo can seriously impact your ability to walk, stand upright, and even sit up. Hearing loss doesn’t cause balance disorders on its own, but problems with the inner ear may also disrupt your vestibular system. Hearing loss may be a sign of an underlying condition which is also impairing your balance.

Earlux FAQs

Why is Earlux different?

We are your virtual, on demand hearing clinic.  The treatment process is effortless, convenient, and most importantly, effective. Our pricing is not only transparent, but offered without the usual markups you find in a traditional clinic. Our hand-picked team of top-quality providers from across the nation will evaluate your hearing, fit and adjust your hearing aids, and provide ongoing care, all from the comfort of your own home. No more trips to the clinic, no more time wasted in the waiting room, and guaranteed results with a 100% 30-day money-back guarantee.

How does the Earlux process work?

This is not your grandpa’s hearing aid clinic.  We are pioneering a new approach to treatment so you can love every minute of your experience.  The process can be broken down into three basic parts: the consultation, the fitting, and the follow-up.

Consultation: Your first interaction with Earlux will be a video conference call with one of our Hearing Pros.  They will get to know you and learn more about your specific needs before administering an online hearing test.  Once you have finished, they will then bring one of our providers on the line to review your case history and the results of the hearing evaluation.  Coupled with your case history, this evaluation will provide us with the necessary information to ensure that we are selecting the best devices for your particular hearing loss.

Fitting: Once the decision is made between you and your treatment team, the devices will be programmed and shipped directly to your home along with all of the necessary equipment.  We will schedule a fitting appointment with your provider.  During your appointment video otoscopy will be performed (yes, we will provide you with a video otoscope) to view your ear canals and verify that a medical referral isn’t necessary. Your provider will then use cutting-edge remote access technology to connect to your hearing aids, conduct another hearing evaluation to verify your online results, and adjust the hearing aids to meet your needs. Our proprietary Cortex-5 fitting method has been developed with the aim of easing you into hearing aid use so that you are never uncomfortable with your new devices, while working you toward optimal performance over the course of several follow-up appointments – it is a personalized process designed with YOU in mind!

Follow-ups: In the beginning, you will have virtual follow-up appointments with your provider on a weekly basis. Because it is so simple to make adjustments remotely, these appointments will generally only take 15 minutes. Depending on how quickly you adapt to your new hearing aids and how long it takes to work your way up to your full prescription (this is a very individual process and we are happy to take all the time you need!), this may only be a couple weeks, or we may meet with you regularly for the first few months. Once you are operating at your full prescription and satisfied with your results, we’ll still check in with you about three times per year, including annual evaluations to check for changes in your hearing. And, of course, we are always just a text or phone call away!

Do I work with a doctor?

The simple answer is an emphatic yes.  While we do employ some hearing instrument specialists, we only select those who possess the highest levels of competency and experience. Furthermore, the care of all patients at Earlux is overseen directly by our team of audiologists.

How do you follow best practices for audiology?

When you begin your journey with Earlux, you will always meet with a licensed, experienced audiologist or hearing instrument specialist. We have developed a process which includes many of the same elements as a traditional in-person visit: a comprehensive case history, an online hearing test which is validated by a second test during the fitting, otoscopy, and a word recognition screening. We do recognize that there are still some limitations when it comes to providing audiology diagnostic services on a virtual platform. If your case history or hearing test indicates a need for further testing that cannot be accomplished remotely, your Earlux provider will always make an appropriate referral to an ENT physician.

Is Earlux just another online hearing aid retailer?

Thankfully, we are so much more. Success with hearing aids can be boiled down to two important factors: using the best technology available  and working with the best providers available. We don’t just pre-program a set of hearing aids and say “call us if you need us.” While this is commonplace with some online retailers, there are innumerable brick and mortar clinics that also follow this practice. Here at Earlux, we don’t just think we can do better. We know we can.

No two hearing aid journeys are alike. With this in mind, we have developed a fitting method that meets you where you are, and then works at your pace the same way that the best physical therapists slowly build you up until you’re working at full strength. Your final prescription is verified using real-world, important sounds like your spouse’s voice, not just beeps in a box. We call it Cortex-5, and it gets results.

Our providers take pride in providing a level of service that is at least equal to – and we think better than – what you would get in a traditional clinic. With Earlux, you’re getting the best service, the best providers, the best technology, and proven methods, all at a reasonable, affordable price.

How much does it cost?

Let’s not beat around the bush.  We understand that transparency and simplicity are  part of finding success in your treatment process, so we offer three different technology levels to suit your needs and budget. You will find most clinics ask for thousands upfront, which leads to most people feeling priced out of the best technology. At Earlux, patients love our three year interest-free financing option ranging from $97-152 a month!

  • $152/ mo or $5,500 (Max)
  • $125/mo or $4,500 (Pro)
  • $97/mo or $3,500 (Plus)

It may end up costing you less than your phone bill.  If you have extenuating circumstances, let us know so we can help find a solution that works for you.

Are there any types of hearing loss that you can’t or won’t work with?

Earlux is a great fit for most hearing losses. In general, anyone 18 and older with a hearing loss that ranges between mild and severe is a great candidate. We may ask you to get medical clearance from a physician prior to the fitting if you have certain conditions. Patients whose ears require medical management (such as chronically draining ears) may not be the best fit for remote care. Finally, because we are providing services remotely, patients who require earmolds will be responsible for having their impressions taken at a local clinic and may prefer to work with in-person providers. If you aren’t sure if we’re the right fit for you, we will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have at your consultation!
